Horace Mann Elementary PTO · Newton, MA

Welcome, Hawk families!

What makes Horace Mann special is our people: curious kids, caring teachers, and families who show up for each other. The PTO brings that community together with events all year long, and raises the money that pays for enrichment programs, staff appreciation and the events themselves. Whether you have five minutes or five hours, there's a place for you here.

Bookmark this page. We update it every month. To get PTO emails, add your family in Membership Toolkit, and follow along on Instagram and in the Horace Mann Parents Facebook group. Last updated October 16, 2026.

Why families love it & how to help

Why come. Dinner or a frozen treat you'd buy anyway, and you'll usually run into other HM families (and teachers).

Pitch in: coordinate one night from home: pick a restaurant, set the date, and share the flyer. About 2–3 hours.

Bagels, fruit and thank-you napkins set out for HM staff during Staff Appreciation Week

Dec 14 · Feb 8 · May 3–7

Pitch in: set-up, calling numbers, or clean-up.

Student-made trifold posters about aviator Bessie Coleman and Wally Amos of Famous Amos cookies at the Black History Celebration

Fri, Feb 26

Black History Celebration

What it is. HM's community celebration of Black history.

Why families love it & how to help

Fri, Mar 19 · HM Gym

Food & Culture Night

Why families love it & how to help

Why come. It's one of HM's most beloved traditions: a chance to taste dishes from around the world and see how many places our families call home.

Pitch in: host a table, or help coordinate tables and set-up.

A packed HM cafeteria of family teams at Trivia Night, with the host at the front

Fri, Apr 2

Pitch in: room parents help on the day.

A visiting author reads a dinosaur book to HM students sitting on the gym floor, next to a big drawing on an easel

All year · during the school day

Creative Arts & Sciences

What it is. Visiting authors, artists, scientists and performers who come to HM during the school day. Every grade gets three curriculum-based programs a year, plus one all-school concert.

Why families love it & how to help

Why it matters. It's the PTO's biggest expense, and it reaches every student. Your dues and the Auction pay for it.

Pitch in: be the 1st grade CAS rep (we need one more!), or pay your dues.

Racks of jackets and sweatshirts in the HM Lost and Found

Before winter break · end of year

Lost & Found

What it is. The rack of jackets, sweatshirts and water bottles in the lobby. We post a last call before winter break and at the end of the year, and anything left after that is donated.

Why it matters. It fills up fast. Check it when you're at school, and label your kids' things so they find their way home.

Pitch in: help sort and donate what's left.

Our most popular way to help

Volunteer in the HM Library

Spend 45 minutes in the library during your child's class visit. You'll help students find books and check them in and out, and you get to see your child's class in action.

  • Sign up a month at a time. Each class has its own tab in the sign-up sheet with its library day and time. Find your child's class and add your name for the month.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early and check in at the front office.
  • You need a current CORI on file. If you haven't had one done at HM, ask the front office. It takes 1–2 weeks.

About us

Questions parents ask

What does the PTO actually do?

We're a group of HM parents and caregivers. We raise money for enrichment and staff support, organize community events, and connect families with each other and with teachers.

Why should I pay dues?

Dues are how the PTO pays for Creative Arts & Sciences, Fitness for Life, staff appreciation and our community events. The PTO spends about $115 per student each year, and we ask every family to pay $75 per student ($200 family max). Pay your dues.

What if $75 per student is hard for us this year?

Please give what you can. Every family's contribution matters, and no amount is too small.

How do I get PTO emails?

Log in to Membership Toolkit and add or update your family's information. You'll get our monthly News Notes, and you can choose what contact info to share with other HM families (handy for birthday invites and play dates).

I only have a little time. How can I help?

Plenty of jobs take an hour or can be done from home: baking for a bake sale, one library visit a month, or a shift at an event. See ways to get involved this month, or join the volunteer list and we\'ll email you when help is needed.

Your 2026–27 PTO Board

Who we are

We're busy moms (and one dad!) with day jobs and kids of our own. Most of us give about four hours a month and join one Zoom call. Forget the PTO stereotypes you may have heard about: we're friendly, normal people who like making HM a fun place to be.

Many more families pitch in as room parents, CAS volunteers and event coordinators.
